“He has watched over your journey through this immense wilderness.”
Deuteronomy 2:7
Isn’t this the case for us who reside in the wilderness of this old creation? We are waiting to behold the resurrection of all we see and to experience a new and vibrant place of uninterrupted security in God’s presence. It can feel we have been in the wilderness much longer than we had hoped or even could conceive of but here is where we can find peace. “He has watched over your journey through this immense wilderness.” Immense. When writing this portion of scripture, Moses did not sugar coat the depths of the people’s experience of the wilderness. We can grow so weary when our sight is set on another day, another task…another hardship. We are in the wilderness waiting to receive the promised land, tempted to grumble and doubt the Lord’s goodness to us. The Holy Spirit reminds us that we are governed by His goodness and we are never alone.
“The Lord your God has been with you this past forty years, and you have lacked nothing”.
Deuteronomy 2:7
In a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, The Lord led His people. We have something far better. We are led by His Spirit that lives inside of us– the indwelling presence of a holy God. We can ever be alone because God can never take His Spirit from us. (Ephesians 1:13-14).
This gives me such hope for today. To know that God is governing every step of my life. And as He calls me to do something that requires faith, perhaps something I cannot possibly conceive to be best, I can remember this: “He has watched over your journey through this immense wilderness.” His goodness will not fail any of us. We are governed by a God inherently good who caused a people, who were inherently bad, to be the benefactors of immeasurable grace. That’s a thought to dwell on today as we wait in this wilderness.
“Let not your heart be troubled”, His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
